The 2018 Kentucky Derby is fast approaching and the future odds board has lots of movement for the first leg of the Triple Crown, taking place Saturday, May 5th at Churchill Downs. We featured the two favorites in our last article, but now let’s look at a long shot who’s getting some early money thrown at him. Hofburg is down to 16/1 after putting in his final workout Sunday morning at Churchill. The son of three-time leading sire Tapit has just one graded stakes under his saddle, finishing second to Audible (6/1) at the Grade 1 Florida Derby, but Hofburg could be a popular selection for Kentucky Derby trifectas and superfectas.

After briefly taking the lead at 3/1 on the horse racing futures market, Justify has slipped back to 4/1, making him the co-favorite with Mendelssohn. Audible has improved from 13/2 to 6/1 – Magnum Moon (8/1), Bolt d’Oro (9/1) and Good Magic (11/1) round out the top six contenders for Saturday’s big race.
Justify was impressive in his 7-furlong workout at Santa Anita Park last week, but with so many horses putting in quality performances on the Road to the Kentucky Derby, the Bob Baffert-trained colt is feeling the heat. Mendelssohn is taking an unorthodox approach to the big race, preparing with trainer Aidan O’Brien in Ireland, and might not work at Churchill Downs until Thursday – provided the horse clears quarantine first.
