The Washington Nationals offense was finally silenced on Tuesday and it was the Pittsburgh Pirates bullpen that did most of the damage. The Nationals, who scored 43 runs in their previous three games, will try and get back in the win column on Wednesday with Patrick Corbin taking the mound opposite Pittsburgh’s Joe Musgrove. Pirates’ starter Chris Archer exited Tuesday’s game after one inning due to shoulder discomfort and the bullpen helped Pittsburgh even the four-game series with a 4-1 victory. It was just the Pirates eighth win in 36 games since the All-Star Break and they have a chance to win back-to-back home games for the first time since July 6-7. Starling Marte slugged a three-run homer in the eighth inning of Tuesday’s victory and is 13-for-31 over the past eight games. Anthony Rendon knocked in the only Washington run on Tuesday and has eight RBI during a seven-game hitting streak after going 3-for-3. The Nationals dropped to six games behind first-place Atlanta in the National League East, but lead the wild card race by a game over the Cubs. Trea Turner has reached base safely in 27 straight for Washington who are now 32-31 away from home.
Pitchers: Nationals – Patrick Corbin (9-5, 3.34 ERA) | Pirates – Joe Musgrove (8-11, 4.59)
Corbin rebounded from a rough outing in Arizona on August 4th with two quality starts against the Mets and Brewers. He limited Milwaukee to one run and seven hits over six innings on Friday after allowing two runs in six innings to New York. He struck out eight batters in each of his last two games and extended his undefeated streak to 11 straight starts. Corbin has totaled 14 innings in his last two starts against Pittsburgh and has allowed just one run while striking out 22.
Musgrove has been inconsistent but is coming off a solid outing after getting knocked around in his previous two starts. The righty struck out a season-high nine and gave up two runs and four hits over 7.1 innings in a no-decision to the Cubs last Friday. He lost his previous two starts, allowing 11 runs in 8.2 innings to the Mets and Cardinals. Musgrove is 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA versus the Nationals.
Tuesday was a minor hiccup in Washington’s explosiveness lately and they’ll get the bats going again against Musgrove on Wednesday. Corbin has been about as consistent as you can get this season and I expect him to dominate Pittsburgh once again.
