If the Milwaukee Brewers don’t make the postseason, they can look back to their recent struggles against the St. Louis Cardinals as one of the reasons. The Brewers dropped their sixth straight contest to St. Louis on Tuesday and are in danger of getting swept for the second time in a row by their NL Central rivals after a 9-4 setback. The Cardinals improved to 9-2 over their last 11 contests and kept their half-game lead over the Chicago Cubs in the division while dropping the Brewers four back. Orlando Arcia drove in a pair of runs and Lorenzo Cain recorded three hits in Tuesday’s loss for Milwaukee, which lost its third straight and sixth in the last eight to fall 3.5 out of a wild card spot. Dexter Fowler drove in four runs for St. Louis and has 12 RBI in his last nine games while Marcell Ozuna had three hits and two runs scored. Paul DeJong went 1-for-3 to drop his batting average to .383 in 12 games versus the Brewers this year. Adam Wainwright looks for his 10th victory of the season for St. Louis when he opposes Adrian Houser in the series finale.
Pitchers: Brewers – Adrian Houser (5-5, 3.76 ERA) | Cardinals – Adam Wainwright (9-8, 4.33)
Houser has been terrific in three of his last four outings, allowing exactly one run in those contests but the Brewers are just 1-5 in his last six starts. He’s coming off a career-high seven innings in a dominant effort at Washington on Friday in which he allowed just two hits. Houser faced the Cardinals way back in April and allowed five runs over four innings.
Wainwright is coming off a shaky outing at Cincinnati last time out but picked up his ninth victory despite allowing three earned runs in 6.2 innings while striking out six and walking one. The veteran righty has seen Milwaukee just once this season and allowed one run in six innings of a 5-2 victory and is 16-9 with a 2.33 ERA lifetime against them.
I’m going to stick with the trend here of the Cardinals owning Milwaukee lately. Wainwright has been very good in his career against the Brewers including a solid effort already this season. Look for St. Louis to maintain first place in the NL Central with a series sweep.
