The New York Yankees have mashed their way closer to the Boston Red Sox and will look for a series win on Tuesday night when they visit the Baltimore Orioles for the middle game of a three-game set at Camden Yards. After winning three of four against American League East-leading Boston over the weekend, the Yankees again used the long ball to rally for a 7-4 win in the series opener on Labor Day. New York has hit eight home runs during their three-game winning streak, with Didi Gregorius and Starlin Castro both hitting two-run shots Monday. That helped New York pull to within 2.5 games of Boston and three clear of Minnesota in the Wild Card standings. They were able to use the longball on Monday without slugger Gary Sanchez, who began serving his three-game suspension for the altercation against the Tigers last weekend. The Orioles had won nine of 11 entering the series and are 1.5 games behind Minnesota in the race for the second wild card spot. Second baseman Jonathan Schoop has gone three straight games without an RBI after driving in 15 runs over his previous 12 games to push his season total over 100. The Yankees have won eight of the last 11 meetings with Baltimore.

CC Sabathia has turned things around after a rough stretch after the All-Star Break. He’s 2-0 with a 1.89 ERA in his last three starts with both of those wins coming against the Red Sox. He was hit hard for seven runs in 5.2 innings against Baltimore in the previous meeting April 28th, but is 19-10 with a 3.47 ERA in 40 career starts versus the Orioles.

Jeremy Hellickson has not had much success with his new team and was scorched by the Blue Jays last time out for seven runs over 4.2 innings. The loss left him 2-3 with a 6.55 ERA in six starts since being acquired from Philadelphia, and he has a 13.50 ERA in his last two home outings. He is 4-2 with a 3.21 ERA in his career against the Yankees.

This is an easy pick for me based solely on the pitching matchup. Sabathia has been solid if not terrific for New York this season, while Hellickson is back to his old self. The Yankees will tee-off on him tonight and cruise to another victory.
