The Philadelphia Eagles are seeking their first winning streak of the season to get back to .500 and stay in the race for the NFC East crown, as they battle the Washington Redskins on Monday Night Football. The Dallas Cowboys currently lead the division at 7-5 with Washington right behind at 6-5 and the Eagles 5-6. All three teams will see each other plenty down the stretch and we know how big head-to-head battles are in determining who wins the division. Philadelphia earned a hard-fought 25-22 victory at home over the New York Giants last week, but have not been on a good run when it comes to covering points spreads. The Eagles have failed to cover their last four against NFC opponents and are just 2-6 ATS in the last eight meetings with the Redskins. Meanwhile, Washington is 5-1 ATS following a loss and that’s exactly what happened last week as they dropped a 31-23 decision to the Cowboys on Thanksgiving. The Redskins are still trying to get along without starting quarterback Alex Smith who is out for the season, and Colt McCoy was not sharp on Thanksgiving versus the Cowboys.
Washington is hoping the additional time off will help McCoy, who had only three days to get ready for his first start in four years before taking on a division rival on the road. McCoy was picked off three times in Dallas, but could get some much needed help in the backfield with the return of running back Chris Thompson, who practiced fully for the first time Friday since suffering broken ribs in late October. Thompson also would take some snaps away from veteran Adrian Peterson, who has been dealing with a shoulder injury. Peterson is definitely a top candidate for comeback player of the year (758 rushing yards), but he’s hit a little bit of a wall as of late, rushing for 35, 51, 68, and 17 yards respectively in the last four games. The Redskins were burned for a pair of long touchdown passes against the Cowboys and rank 23rd versus the pass.
Philly quarterback Carson Wentz is having an uneven season for sure, throwing three interceptions at New Orleans two weeks ago, but bouncing back by throwing for 238 yards and a touchdown in the comeback win over New York. Tight end Zach Ertz continued his career year with seven more catches for 91 yards and a score to boost his season totals to a career-best 84 receptions and 895 yards. Running back Josh Adams provided a spark to the running game with 84 yards rushing on 22 carries – both season highs – while scoring for the second week in a row. The much-maligned Philadelphia defense held New York to three second-half points last week but ranks 28th against the pass (276.5 yards).
Both teams have their issues for sure, but Washington is really struggling, losing three of four and the win was a gift from the Buccaneers. Philly will be ready for this game at home under the lights. Wentz has big numbers against Washington and that continues tonight.
