The Boston Red Sox look to inch closer to the top of the division when they take on the first-place New York Yankees in the opener of a three-game series on Tuesday night in the Bronx. The Red Sox, who are currently 4-3 on their 10-game road trek, are coming off a weekend series win at Baltimore and have leap-frogged the O’s into second place just two games behind the Bronx Bombers. The Red Sox are winners of 10 of their last 14 and head into the series against the Yankees looking for some revenge after dropping both games of a rain-shortened set at home against New York back in late April while totaling one run. Red Sox left fielder Andrew Benintendi is starting to heat up again, going 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs on Sunday after going 2-for-27 in his previous eight games. The Yankees are coming off a split of a four-game set at Toronto over the weekend and are riding the bat of rookie slugger Aaron Judge along with a pitching staff that has allowed three or fewer runs in five of the last seven games. The biggest question mark in the rotation takes center-stage tonight. Masahiro Tanaka will get a chance to turn things around when he opposes Boston lefty Drew Pomeranz. Veteran DH Matt Holliday is riding a six-game hitting streak with three home runs and seven RBIs in that span and is second behind Judge in both home runs (12) and RBI’s (37). Center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury (concussion) stopped all activities over the weekend after a recurrence of headaches.
Pitchers: Red Sox – Drew Pomeranz (5-3, 4.24 ERA) | Yankees – Masahiro Tanaka (5-5, 6.34)
Pomeranz is coming off a season-high seven innings on Wednesday when he struck out eight without issuing a walk against the Chicago White Sox. He allowed just one run on seven hits to pick up the victory. Pomeranz struck out a season-high 11 while walking one in his previous start against a hot-hitting Texas team. He faced New York three times last season and allowed a total of two runs in 12.1 innings of work the first two times before getting knocked around for four runs in 3.2 innings on September 18th.
Tanaka could use a solid start to get his confidence back as he’s lost his last four starts and allowed at least six earned runs in three of those outings. Tanaka struck out 13 and allowed one run over 7.1 innings in a win over Oakland on May 26th but was hit for seven runs and nine hits in 5.2 innings at Baltimore on Wednesday. Tanaka’s best start of the season was at Boston on April 27th, when he scattered three hits and did not walk a batter while cruising to a complete-game shutout.

The Red Sox were the favorites to win the AL East coming into this season and after a slow start, they’re playing like it. The pitching still isn’t there for Boston, but the bats are starting to click and they should be able to chase a struggling Tanaka on Tuesday.
