The Tampa Bay Rays are slowly getting back into the Wild Card race in the American League after their 4th win in their last 6 games yesterday in New York. The Rays beat the Yankees 3-2 thanks to a couple of early runs and a bullpen who only allowed 2 hits in 4 1/3 innings of work. Tampa Bay is still 10 games out of first in the A.L. East, but only 4 games back in the Wild Card. They’re starting to score a little more runs than usual and with their strong pitching, they just might be able to see October. Ace Chris Archer tries to keep things rolling today. He’s been a little up and down recently. In his last 4 starts he has allowed zero runs in two of them and 12 runs in the other two. He’s allowed just 2 runs in 13.1 innings against New York this year.
The Yankees missed a chance yesterday to stay within a half a game of Toronto in the division. They just couldn’t break through against the Rays bullpen and left 9 runners on base. Shortstop Didi Gregorious continues to swing a hot bat getting a hit yesterday for the 8th time in 9 games. The Yankees can’t afford a losing streak if they want to stay close to the Blue Jays. After today the Yankees host Baltimore for three then a huge 4-game series next weekend against Toronto. Ivan Nova starts today and he’ll need to be much better than he has been lately. He has lost 3 straight games and has given up 13 runs in those loses. In 68 innings this year he was surrendered 24 walks to only 42 strikeouts.
I’m having a hard time picking a winner in this one. I can’t take Tampa as a road favorite against a good hitting team and I can’t justify betting on Nova right now. I think the total is a little low and the Yanks have the bats that can get to Archer.
Pick: Over 7.5 -115
