For most of the season, the New York Mets couldn’t do anything right – on the field and off. Now, everything is going right for them and Wednesday was just another example. New York looks for the three-game interleague sweep of the Cleveland Indians on Thursday after a 4-3 extra-innings victory on Wednesday. Cleveland’s Carlos Santana gave his team a 10th inning lead with his 30th homer, but closer Brad hand failed to cover first base on a potential game-ending double play in the bottom half of the inning, giving Cleveland its sixth loss in eight games. J.D. Davis recorded his first career walk-off hit for New York, which has won four in a row and 20 of its last 25 to pull within 1.5 games of St. Louis in the wild card race. The Mets’ offense is being helped by the red-hot Amed Rosario, who is 17-for-33 in his last seven games, while Wilson Ramos is riding a 15-game hitting streak. The Indians now trail Minnesota by three games in the AL Central and will send rookie Aaron Civale to the mound to take on Noah Syndergaard. The Mets have now won five of the last six meetings with the Indians dating back to 2013.
Pitchers: Indians – Aaron Civale (1-2, 1.50 ERA) | Mets – Noah Syndergaard (8-6, 3.86)
Civale has pitched exactly six innings in each of his first four big league starts and has been very effective despite his worst outing to date last time out. The New York Yankees got him for three runs – two earned – and eight hits in the 3-2 setback. Prior to that, he had allowed a total of two runs in his first three starts and carries a 0.96 WHIP. Civale will face a National League opponent for the first time Thursday.
Syndergaard has put his June and early July troubles behind him with six quality starts in seven turns after allowing two runs over six innings against Kansas City last time out, but the offense couldn’t come through in the 4-1 setback. He has allowed just one home run in this last seven outings and surrendered two runs or less in six of those. This will be Syndergaard’s first meeting versus Cleveland.
Civale has been pretty good, but he’s no match for the locked-in Syndergaard. I’m riding the Mets train once again here as a pretty reasonable favorite.
