New York, NY
Time: 7:10 ET | TV: FS Arizona, SNY
Opening Odds: New York -120/8
The New York Mets aren’t going away and have cooled-off the red-hot Arizona Diamondbacks in the first two games of their four-game set and will go for a third consecutive win on Wednesday night with Steven Matz opposing fellow lefty Robbie Ray. New York moved to within three games of the Chicago Cubs for the second NL wild card spot, with Arizona a half-game in front of the Mets after a 3-2 win on Tuesday. Todd Frazier drove in all three runs with a pair of doubles on Tuesday and is now batting .317 with runners in scoring position on the season. Arizona was scorching hot and were the team on the heels of the Cubs, but the bats have gone cold during their three-game skid, scoring three runs or less in each of their last four contests. Eduardo Escobar extended his hitting streak to 12 with a solo homer while driving in both runs Tuesday. He has six homers, 12 RBI and 12 runs scored during the streak and is 2-for-3 with a homer versus Matz. Arizona will play one more in New York on Thursday afternoon before hosting 12 of their last 15 games at Chase Field.
Pitchers: Diamondbacks – Robbie Ray (12-7, 4.03 ERA) | Mets – Steven Matz (9-8, 4.00)
Arizona is 5-1 in Ray’s last six trips to the mound but has completed six innings only once in that span including last time out at Cincinnati when he had to leave after 4.1 innings with a blister on his left middle finger. He is 3-0 in those six starts but walks have been driving up his pitch count, issuing 15 free passes in his last five outings. Ray has been terrific in four career starts against the Mets, posting a 2-0 record and 0.82 ERA.
Matz has been one of the more underrated hurlers in the National League lately, surrendering three runs or less in nine of his last 10 starts and settled for a no-decision last time out against Philadelphia. The lefty allowed two runs over 5.2 innings of a 5-4 win over the Phillies after beating them in his previous start. One of his worst outings of the season came at Arizona on June 2nd when he allowed five runs on eight hits in a 7-1 setback. Matz is 6-1 with a 2.11 ERA at home this season.
Arizona has been winning with Ray on the mound but he’s been getting a lot of run support, something this Arizona team is currently lacking. Matz has been terrific and the Mets are still breathing. I say Matz outpitches Ray in this one and helps the Mets to another victory.
