The Washington Nationals and Minnesota Twins appear to heading into the postseason and will battle each other in what should be a very good three-game interleague series. It’s unlikely they will meet in late October, but it would be an interesting matchup of teams playing very well lately. The Nationals are comfortably ahead of the Chicago Cubs for the top spot in the National League wild card race, while the Twins are pulling away from the Cleveland Indians in the AL Central. Minnesota is just hoping to get healthy before the end of the regular season, as the team was missing four regulars and another left the game early Sunday in a 5-2 loss to Cleveland, who they lead by 5.5 games. Marwin Gonzalez (oblique), Byron Buxton (shoulder) and Miguel Sano (back tightness) were unavailable Sunday, while slugger Nelson Cruz (wrist) was held out an extra day to rest. Max Kepler left in the second inning with upper-chest discomfort for Minnesota, who are 5-3 in their last eight games and have just six contests left against teams with winning records. The Nationals snapped a four-game losing skid with a 9-4 victory over Atlanta on Sunday and are 9-5 in interleague play this season with Cleveland still on the schedule to finish the year. Superstar outfielder Juan Soto became the sixth player in major league history to record 100 RBI in a season before his 21st birthday over the weekend.

Pitchers: Nationals – Anibal Sanchez (8-7, 4.11 ERA) | Twins – Jose Berrios (11-8, 3.78)

Both of tonight’s starters are coming off terrible outings with Sanchez allowing seven runs and eight hits (three homers) with three walks over five innings in an 8-4 loss to the Mets. It was the veteran righty’s first loss since May 10th in which he went 8-0 with a 3.16 ERA in that span. Sanchez is 6-5 with a 3.44 ERA away from home including an 8.1-inning outing at the Chicago Cubs on August 23rd in which he surrendered just one hit.

Berrios was nearly as bad as Sanchez in his latest outing, allowing six runs over five innings at Boston in a loss last Wednesday. Berrios has allowed five runs or more in four of his last six trips to the mound while giving up eight homers in that span. He is 5-8 lifetime in interleague play but will be facing the Nationals for the first time.

I like the Nationals in this spot. Minnesota has a lot of banged-up guys in the lineup and Berrios has just not looked good lately. Look for Sanchez to pitch well enough to help his team to a road victory.
