We were on the losing end of the New York Mets over the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday and we’re going right back to Citi Field for the middle game of their three-game set on Wednesday night with Kyle Hendricks opposing Noah Syndergaard. Yu Darvish put in a season-high eight innings in the series opener as the Cubs pulled out a 5-2 victory to increase their wild card lead over Philadelphia to two games while pulling within three games of Washington for the top wild card spot. Javier Báez and Addison Russell each broke out of slumps by hitting two-run homers and collected three hits to help the Cubs improve to 26-39 away from home and snap a three-game losing streak. Russell went deep for the second straight game as Chicago was without first baseman Anthony Rizzo again due to back spams and may miss the rest of the series. Rookie sensation Pete Alonso electrified the Citi Field crowd with his 42nd homer to set a franchise single-season record. Alonso became the first rookie to set a team’s single-season homer record since Pittsburgh’s Johnny Rizzo in 1938.
Pitchers: Cubs – Kyle Hendricks (9-9, 3.20 ERA) | Mets – Noah Syndergaard (9-6, 3.71)
Hendricks has rebounded from an awful outing at Cincinnati on August 10th with two gems against Pittsburgh and San Francisco. He limited the Giants to three hits over seven scoreless innings after allowing just one run in seven innings against the Pirates. He’s allowed two runs or less in nine of his last 10 starts and has been terrific in his career against the Mets, surrendering one run in 19.1 regular season innings against them.
Syndergaard has been on a similar run and is also coming off a scoreless outing last time out, limiting the Cleveland Indians to two hits over six innings. The righty has served-up just one homer in eight starts since the All-Star Break and has allowed two runs or less in all but one of those outings. Syndergaard is 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA in four career starts against the Cubs.
I’m really not sure where the runs are going to come from in this one with the way both Hendricks and Syndergaard have been pitching. The under is 5-1 in New York’s last six games and 6-3-1 in Chicago’s last 10. I expect this one to go under as well.
