There’s going to be a lot of ‘lasts’ this season in Oakland, as the Raiders are set to leave town at the end of the year and head to the Las Vegas Strip for 2020. This Thursday night will mark the final Chargers vs. Raiders contest in Oakland and both teams are still alive for a playoff spot, and this will be a pivotal matchup as we enter Week 10. The prime time schedule hasn’t been very great this year, but this week we get this big AFC West showdown and then Minnesota/Dallas on Sunday and Seattle vs. San Francisco on MNF. First up is the L.A. Chargers coming to Oakland with a 4-5 record and a huge win over the Green Bay Packers last Sunday. The Bolts were dominant from start to finish in their 26-11 triumph and come into this contest as slight one-point favorites on the road. Oakland stayed 1.5 games behind first place Kansas City with a 31-24 home win over Detroit – their first game in Oakland since September 15th. Last year, the Chargers swept the season series with both wins by double digits. It was 20-6 in Oakland with Philip Rivers throwing touchdown passes to Melvin Gordon and Keenan Allen. The Raiders managed only field goals in the first and fourth quarters. Oakland outgained L.A. 135-6 in the first quarter but only led 3-0. The favorite is 4-1 ATS in the past five meetings while the under has come in five straight times.
Chargers coach Anthony Lynn fired offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt following a 17-16 win in Chicago in Week 8, and on Sunday the Chargers offense was clicking with quarterbacks coach Shane Steichen handling play-calling duties on that side of the ball. There seemed to be a renewed focus on running the ball as L.A. had 159 yards and two scores – both from Melvin Gordon – on the ground and dominated time of possession. The Chargers had been the first team in the Super Bowl era with fewer than 40 yards rushing in four straight games. Top linebacker Denzel Perryman left with a right knee injury and might not be ready on short-rest. The L.A. defense is ranked eighth overall and fifth against the pass (208.7). The Chargers are 4-0 ATS in their past four Thursday games.
Derek Carr hit Hunter Renfrow on the game-winning 9-yard touchdown pass with 2:04 remaining and held Detroit out of the end zone in the final seconds on fourth-and-1 at the 1-yard line to secure the win. Rookie of the Year candidate Josh Jacobs rushed for 120 yards and two scores on 28 carries and the Raiders boast the sixth-best rushing attack in the league at 136.4 yards a contest. The Raiders got a total of four touchdowns from rookies, the first time that has happened for the franchise since the AFL/NFL merger. Defense has been an issue for Oakland, ranking dead-last against the pass, but are seventh against the run. They are 6-1 ATS in their past seven home games.
This Raiders team has played better of late – at least offensively – and I’m not overreacting to the Chargers win over the Packers. Oakland will have success rushing the football and come away with a win here.
