The Toronto Blue Jays will look to reach the .500 mark for the first time this season when they begin a six-game road trip in Oakland against the Athletics on Monday night. Josh Donaldson, who came off the disabled list late last month, hit his fourth homer in five games on Sunday to give the Blue Jays a 3-2 win over the Yankees and a series win. After a horrendous start to the season, Toronto is 10-3 over their last 13 games and are almost out of the basement in the AL East. They will take on lefty Sean Manaea tonight, who has allowed just one run in 14 innings over his last two starts. Oakland could use a solid effort from Manaea as the staff has been getting rocked lately, including yesterday’s 11-10 loss to the Washington Nationals. Oakland has surrendered an average of 10.3 runs in their last four losses. Oakland’s rally in the ninth inning fell short, but Matt Joyce belted a grand slam to make it interesting and has homered twice in his last three games. Toronto 1B Justin Smoak also homered Sunday and has equaled his 2016 total (14) in 70 fewer games.

J.A. Happ missed the first month and a half of the season and will make his fifth start of the year and will be looking for his first victory. He was one of baseball’s three 20-game winners a year ago and is coming off a no-decision against Cincinnati on Tuesday. Happ has failed to get through five innings in three consecutive starts. The southpaw is 4-0 with a 3.17 ERA in nine career games (seven starts) versus Oakland.
Manaea retired the first 10 batters he faced against the Indians on Wednesday, finishing with nine strikeouts while allowing one run on three hits in seven innings. He is 4-2 with a 2.92 ERA over his last seven starts and has allowed five hits or fewer in all nine outings on the year. Manaea allowed two runs on three hits in five innings in his one prior start against Toronto (2016).

The pitching matchup favors the A’s in this one, but Toronto is starting to play well now and Happ is better than his record indicates.
