The Houston Astros, who trail Baltimore by 5.5 games in the race for the second Wild Card spot, will begin a four-game series with the Orioles on Thursday night. Houston has dropped four straight and have been outscored 29-11 in the process. Houston will play 14 of their next 20 away from Minute Maid Park and are just 27-31 on the road. RF George Springer is just 1-for-13 with six strikeouts in his last four games, but rookie Alex Bregman is batting .312 with seven RBIs in his last 11 games. Baltimore begins the night two games behind Toronto in the AL East and one back of second place Boston. The O’s dropped both games of a two-game set against Boston including last night’s rain-shortened 8-1 loss. Baltimore pitching gave up 13 runs in the 15 innings they played against the Red Sox.
Pitchers: Astros – Joe Musgrove (1-0, 1.47 ERA) | Orioles – Kevin Gausman (3-10, 4.04)
Joe Musgrove earned his first career victory on Friday in a 5-3 win over the Blue Jays – the team that drafted him in 2011. Musgrove allowed two runs in seven innings to record his second straight quality start. Musgrove struck out seven in that contest and has fanned 13 batters while walking one over his last two outings.
Kevin Gausman has allowed exactly two runs in each of his last three starts and two of them were on the road where he has been terrible. Gausman is 0-9 away from home, but 3-1 with a 2.39 ERA at Camden Yards. Gausman struggled in his lone career start versus Houston on May 26th allowing three homers (two to Springer) and four runs overall in five innings.
Houston is really sliding right now and I think the Orioles are going to hit Musgrove pretty good. Gausman has been good at home and we only have to lay a buck fifteen on the home team.
