The Houston Astros will open a nine-game homestand on Friday night with the first of three against the Los Angeles Angels. Houston is coming off a solid 8-2 road trip after a 6-1 victory at Kansas City on Thursday and are an MLB-best 43-18. Star second baseman Jose Altuve belted a tie-breaking two-run homer in the ninth inning to help improve Houston to 23-8 away from home and give them a home run in 16 consecutive games. The streak is the second longest in franchise history behind an 18-game run in 2000 and Houston now has a major league best 95 dingers. George Springer saw his 12-game hitting streak come to an end on Thursday, while in the injury department, ace Dallas Keuchel was placed on the 10-day DL with a neck issue. Houston is 5-2 against the Angels this season and Los Angeles has not fared well at Minute Maid Park, dropping 21 of its last 30. The Angels pounded the Tigers 11-4 on Thursday to take two of three in Detroit to win a road series for the first time since the end of April. Designated hitter Albert Pujols is just 2-for-13 in four games since hitting his 600th career homer.
Pitchers: Angels – Matt Shoemaker (5-3, 4.12 ERA) | Astros – Brad Peacock (3-0, 2.30)
Matt Shoemaker has turned his early season woes around by winning four of his past five starts and has a 2.73 ERA during the stretch. Shoemaker is just 2-5 however, with a 3.86 ERA in 11 career appearances (nine starts) against the Astros, including 0-2 with a 4.85 ERA in two appearances this season. He’s had his issues with Altuve (10-for-26, three homers) just like every other pitcher in the league, but has owned George Springer (2-for-21, eight strikeouts).
Brad Peacock threw a season-high 86 pitches on Sunday while making just his third start of the season after 12 relief appearances. He was forced into the rotation because of injuries with the staff and he’s fared well. Peacock struck out a season-high nine while allowing just two runs and four hits over six innings in a win over the Texas Rangers in his last turn. Peacock is 3-1 with a 4.54 ERA in eight career appearances (five starts) versus the Angels.

Peacock might not give you seven innings consistently, but he’s striking out a lot of batters this season (47 in 31 innings) and should be able to hold down a Mike Trout-less lineup. Shoemaker has been pitching well of late, but the Astros know him well and they’re the best lineup, top to bottom, in baseball. Take the runline and relax while you watch Game 4 of the NBA Finals.
