The Yankees and Red Sox continue their 3-game series tonight with the Yankees needing a win to keep up with Toronto in the American League East. Last night, the Yanks came up short in a 4-3 loss in Boston. After scoring 38 runs in 3 games over the weekend in Atlanta, the Yankees could only muster 3 runs on 10 hits. They left 14 men on base. Didi Gregorious continues to swing a hot bat for New York. He had 4 hits last night to go along with his 7 over the weekend. He also has 11 RBI in his last 5 games. Michael Pineda tries to rebound from 3 terrible outings over the last few weeks. He’s 0-3 with a 7.88 ERA in those loses to Minnesota, Houston, and Seattle. Not exactly high-powered offenses. The outing prior to that, he beat the Red Sox 5-1.
Boston comes in just looking to play spoilers to their long-time rival. The Red Sox were projected by many to compete for a division title, but are now 61-70 on the year. They have one of the worst pitching staffs in the majors, but also one of the best offenses. They just can’t score enough to cover for their lousy pitching. They are playing well of late winning 5 of their last 7. One of the reasons for their bad pitching is starting tonight. Rick Porcello who had a nice year with Detroit last season, has been lit up this year to the tune of a 6-11 record and 5.47 ERA. He’s given up 143 hits in 121 innings. His best outing of the year came last week when he shut out the White Sox for 7 innings in a 3-0 win. This will actually be his first start against the Yankees this season.
With all that being said, I’m leaning on taking the over in this one. I do think the Yankees will win tonight, but these pitchers are bad right now and I think the over is an easy winner.
