The Boston Red Sox have already stuck a dagger in the hearts of New York Yankee fans everywhere, and can add insult to injury with a four-game sweep on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball. Boston pitching dominated the last two games by limiting New York to just two runs total and have opened-up an 8.5-game lead in the American League Central. The Yankees will try and get to David Price once again in the finale against the red-hot Masahiro Tanaka. J.D. Martinez blasted his team-high 33rd homer of the season in Saturday’s win and is 6-for-15 with four homers during a four-game hitting streak for Boston, which has won seven of its last eight overall and is 7-5 against New York in 2018. New York can now probably turn their attention to the first AL Wild Card spot, where they lead Oakland by four games entering Saturday night’s action. The Yankees have lost a season-high four games in a row and are just 7-10 over the last 17 overall. Giancarlo Stanton is 4-for-11 with two doubles and a homer while Didi Gregorius has driven in five in the series for the Yankees, who left the bases loaded in the ninth inning Saturday. New York will begin a three-game series at the lowly Chicago White Sox on Monday, while Boston heads to Toronto on Tuesday to play the Blue Jays.
Pitchers: Yankees – Masahiro Tanaka (9-2, 3.84 ERA) | Red Sox – David Price (11-6, 3.97)
Tanaka, as I mentioned, has been on fire lately, out-pitching the rest of the Yankees staff including Luis Severino lately. The Japan native has allowed six hits over 15 scoreless innings with 17 strikeouts in his last two starts to extend his unbeaten streak to 13 outings. Tanaka is 6-0 with a 4.00 ERA in 11 road outings this season and is 8-4 with a 4.18 ERA in 16 career starts against Boston – 1-0 (8.71) in 2018.
Price started out the month of July by surrendering five home runs in a loss at Yankee Stadium, but has three-straight quality starts since. Price, who is 22-7 all time at Fenway Park, limited Philadelphia to one run and eight hits with five strikeouts across eight innings of a no-decision Monday. He is 15-13 with a 4.90 ERA in his career versus the Bronx Bombers.
The AL East is over, so now the Yankees can focus on maintaining the top Wild Card spot and get Aaron Judge back healthy. New York showed some life in the ninth inning last night and really love hitting against Price. Look for Tanaka to keep the momentum going here as the Yankees avoid a sweep.
