The Yankees and Blue Jays begin their biggest series of the year tonight in Toronto when Adam Warren takes the mound against David Price. The Yankees took 2 of 3 against the Mets and are now only 2.5 games behind the Blue Jays in the American League East. We all know the importance of winning your division is. Neither team wants to play a 1-game playoff. Right now the Yankees would play host to Texas in that Wild Card game. After struggling to score runs in their previous 4 games, the Yanks poured on 16 runs Saturday and Sunday and now have some momentum when they face Price tonight. Warren made 14 starts before moving to the bullpen on June 25th. He made a start last week in Tampa and only lasted 4 innings in a 6-3 loss. He’s only faced the Blue Jays out of the bullpen this year and hasn’t allowed a run in only 2/3 of an inning.
The Blue Jays looked like they were on their way to winning the division when they took a 4.5 game lead into Saturday’s play, but they lost 2 in a row to Boston while the Yankees were winning. They took 3 of 4 in New York last weekend scoring 30 runs in the 3 wins and getting shutout in the loss. Price got the win in one of those games and he gets another crack at them tonight. He is 3-0 with a 1.89 ERA in his last 3 starts and he has 8.33 runs per game of support from the offense in that stretch. The Jays are 48-27 at home this year and get the next 6 at Rogers Centre before finishing the season on the road in Baltimore and Tampa Bay.
I believe the Yankees can take 2 out of 3 in this series, but they won’t win tonight. Price is too good and the Blue Jays should tee off on Warren. The odds are a little too high to take straight-up, so I’ll play in conservatively and take the runline.
Pick: Blue Jays -1.5 -115
