The Washington Wizards begin an important five-game West Coast trip when they visit the suddenly hot Phoenix Suns on Tuesday night. The Wizards embark on the trip winners of three of four after a tough 115-114 home victory over Orlando on Sunday thanks to recently acquired Bojan Bogdanovic, who scored for 15 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter. Bogdanovic hit a career-high eight 3-pointers in Sunday’s win, including one that put the team ahead in the final minute, and he is a sizzling 20-of-31 from 3-point range over the last five games. The former Brooklyn Net reached 27 points in two of the last three games – both wins – and is proving he can share the floor with All-Stars John Wall and Bradley Beal. Wall has cooled-off recently, shooting just 34.2% from the floor over the last four games. Beal scored 42 points in Washington’s 106-101 home win over Phoenix on November 21st. Point guard Brandon Jennings continues to become more comfortable around his new teammates as well. He dished out seven assists in 17 minutes off the bench on Sunday – his second game since joining the team. Washington’s five-game trip against Western Conference opponents will not include any that have a winning record.

The Suns have taken the first three of the five-game homestand to pull ahead of the Los Angeles Lakers and out of the basement in the West, capped by Sunday’s 109-106 upset win over the Boston Celtics. Phoenix doesn’t look like a team that is tanking for a better shot at a high draft pick after dealing away P.J. Tucker and benching veterans Tyson Chandler and Brandon Knight in favor of younger players. Those younger players have stepped up their minutes and play. Rookie point guard Tyler Ulis, whose increase in playing time has come at the expense of Knight, scored a season-high 20 points on Sunday and hit the winning 3-pointer at the buzzer after a steal. The other big beneficiary of the minutes that opened up is power forward Alan Williams, who has posted a double-double in three straight and four of the last five games. Williams contributed 11 points, 15 rebounds and a pair of steals on Sunday in 31 minutes – the third time in the last five games that he registered at least 30 minutes. The Suns homestand will come to an end on Thursday against the last-place Lakers.

Washington won’t take this team lightly and really need to come out of this trip with a winning record. The Wizards veterans will prove too much for Phoenix to handle tonight. Look for Washington to win by double-digits.
Pick: Wizards -3.5
