Fans in Southern Idaho believe this is the year that their Boise State Broncos run the table and enter the College Football Playoffs. With 17 returning starters including 9 on offense, Boise State does have the talent to go all the way. The problem I see is the schedule. They open Friday against a PAC 12 team in Washington, then they visit BYU. Two weeks later they’re in Virginia on a Friday night and then they still have conference road games at Colorado State and Utah State. Now because Boise is not ranked high to start the season, a loss in any of those games will end their playoff chances. Although they do return 9 starters on offense, they did lose their quarterback and leading rusher. Ryan Finely will take over under center this year. Last year he only completed 12 of 27 passes. They do not have much experience at QB this year for 2nd year head coach Bryan Harsin. Defensively the Broncos are solid including the Mountain West Conference’s best defensive line.

Former Boise State head man Chris Petersen is in his 2nd year with the Huskies. Last year they struggled through an up and down season finishing with an 8-6 record and a loss to Oklahoma State in the Cactus Bowl. Washington lost a lot of NFL type talent in the offseason so besting last year’s 8 win total might be tough. They do return their top 2 running backs and top 4 wide receivers from last year. Defensively they lost a lot and only return 4 starters. The let up almost 25 points per game last year and were 1-4 ATS against non-conference opponents. This will be Washington’s first trip to the blue turf field of Boise where Petersen was 48-2 in his 8 years.
Boise struggled in their opening game last year against Ole Miss, so the young QB might need some time to get going. Even with that being said, Washington is going to let up a lot of points this year and Boise’s offensive and defensive lines are pretty good. I’ll swallow the points here.
Pick: Boise State -12
