Now that the Golden State Warriors are healthy, can anyone beat them but themselves? Golden State is now looking like the team that should be the prohibitive favorite not only in the West, but all of the NBA now. They will look to extend their eight game winning streak with a battle in the Nation’s Capital against the Washington Wizards on Thursday night. The Warriors have already taken the first two of their five-game road trip – victories in the Staples Center against the Clippers and Lakers. Its always a different guy each night taking over a game and against the Lakers it was Klay Thompson. The sharpshooter from Washington State knocked down 10-of-11 from 3-point range en route to 44 points in 27 minutes in the 130-111 victory, matching the NBA record both for consecutive made 3-pointers to start a game (10) and for consecutive made 3-pointers within a game. The Wizards have struggled most of the season without point guard John Wall, but are on a decent run right now, winning four of their last five, with the only loss being an overtime thriller versus Toronto. All of those games have been at home where they are 14-8 on the season. The most recent contest being their best defensively, a 101-87 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Monday. Golden State has won the last four in the series, including a 109-101 win at Washington last season.
Thompson finished Monday’s game versus the Lakers 17-of-20 from the floor and reached double figures in made 3-pointers for the second time this season. Thompson has been known to be streaky and has broken out of a long slump by draining 52.2 percent from 3-point range over the last 11 games after shooting 30.3 percent from that distance in the previous 14. DeMarcus Cousins will be playing his third game since coming back from a long injury absence and has 22 points on 7-of-20 shooting over his first two contests with his new team.
Veteran small forward Trevor Ariza, who averages just 11.7 points a game, has scored over that in each of the past five games including three outings in the 20s. He led the way on Monday with 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting and 12 rebounds in the win over Detroit. Fellow small forward Otto Porter Jr. is averaging 22 points over the last three games, coming off the bench. Center Thomas Bryant has recorded a double-double in two of the last three games including 11 points and 12 rebounds against the Pistons.
The Wizards have been playing pretty well lately, not only covering eight of their last 10, but doing against pretty good teams in Philadelphia, Toronto, Milwaukee, and Oklahoma City. They’ll be up for this game and I can see them keeping it in single-digits. As good as the Warriors are, I have a hard time laying this many points on the road.
