The UL Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns are coming off their first Sun Belt Conference game 10 days ago when they beat Texas State 49-27 at home. UL Lafayette brings with them the 16th ranked rushing attack in FBS. They average 231 yards a game on the ground led by Elijah McGuire’s 585 yards. McGuire has also contributed 7 rushing touchdowns, although 5 of those came in one game. Junior quarterback Jalen Nixon has contributed 128 yards on the ground while throwing for 533 on a 62.8% completion rate. Nixon had his best game of the year in the win over Texas State completing 22-of-29 for 238 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran in a score while rushing for 45 yards. Defensively, the Cajuns are ranked 100th in the nation allowing 32.4 points per game. They’re 93rd against the run and 62nd against the pass.

Arkansas State has started out perfect in their two Sun Belt games beating Idaho and South Alabama, scoring 49 points in each contest. The Red Wolves were down 24-20 last Tuesday night in South Alabama before erupting for 29 fourth quarter points en route to a 49-31 win. The final two scores were a fumble recovery in the end zone and 37 yard interception return by Justin Clifton. Johnston White leads the team with 7 rushing touchdowns, but is the third leading rusher on the Wolves. Senior Michael Gordon leads the team with 490 yards on the ground, but 221 of those yards came against a win over the Idaho Vandals. He’s averaging 6.6 yards a carry for his career. Fredi Knighten, who missed three games with a groin injury, came back last Tuesday and threw for 119 yard and two scores. The preseason all-Sun Belt quarterback accounted for 4,056 yards and 35 touchdowns last year. The senior averaged 60 rushing yards and 252 passing yards per game last year, and he topped both of those marks (61 rushing and 344 passing) in last year’s loss at Cajun Field.
Arkansas State’s offense is rolling right now and with Knighten back, they should be one of the favorites to win the Sun Belt this year. I’ll take the Red Wolves tonight to win and cover.
Pick: Arkansas State -8.5
