Two teams currently going in opposite directions will battle in a three-game series starting Tuesday night in Oakland as the Athletics host the first place Minnesota Twins. The lead in the AL Central is down to eight games for the Twins after they dropped three of their last four after Sunday’s 4-3 loss at the Chicago White Sox. Minnesota will finish the first half of the season at home versus Texas later this week as they continue one of their best starts in franchise history. Designated hitter Nelson Cruz has hit three of his 16 home runs over the past two games. Oakland is trending in the other direction with wins in 13 of its last 18 contests to pull within seven games of first place Houston and a half-game out of the AL Wild Card. The A’s took the last three games of a four-game set at the L.A. Angels this past weekend by a combined 23-5 behind newly-minted All-Star Matt Chapman. The third baseman went 3-for-5 with his 21st home run and six RBI in Sunday’s 12-3 mauling of the Angels. Fellow slugger Khris Davis missed the last three games with a hand injury and is questionable for Tuesday’s opener against the Twins.

Speaking of All-Stars, Twins pitcher Jake Odorizzi is enjoying the best season of his eight-year career with a sub-3.00 ERA while winning 10 games against just three losses. He has regressed a bit in his last three outings, allowing a total of 11 runs and 19 hits across 15.1 innings. Odorizzi, who’s three losses have all been on the road, has served-up just one home run away from home.

Daniel Mengden threw six scoreless innings in a win at St. Louis on Wednesday and has allowed just two earned runs total over his last three starts spanning back to May 18th. Mengden is making his first career appearances against Minnesota and the A’s are 6-1 in his last seven starts dating back to last season.
I don’t like the way Odorizzi is pitching right now despite being selected to the All-Star Game. He’s allowed four homers in his last three starts and the A’s have 133 dingers on the season – seventh best in the majors. Look for Oakland to improve on their 24-19 home record in Tuesday’s opener.
