The Phoenix Suns and Memphis Grizzlies are two of the potentially seven teams vying for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. There are 5.5 games separating seventh and eighth place in the West, while the next seven teams are within six games of each other. The Suns and Grizzlies battle for the third time this season on Sunday evening at FedExForum in Memphis with the Suns coming to town as 2-point underdogs. The Grizzlies are currently the eighth seed after breaking a two-game skid Friday with a 125-112 win at the Detroit Pistons and have won six of seven at home, but will have a stretch with 15 of 21 on the road beginning on Wednesday. The win on Friday came after losses to New Orleans and Boston and will have a back-to-back beginning Tuesday. Phoenix dropped two in a row at home to San Antonio and Indian before getting revenge versus the Spurs on the road 103-99 on Friday. That marked the beginning of a three-game road trip that will take the team to Dallas on Tuesday. The Suns are in 10th place, two games behind the Grizzlies. Phoenix dropped the first two meetings to Memphis this season at home, making it four wins in a row for the road team in the series.
Star guard Devin Booker has scored 35 or more points in three of the last four games and 30 or more in 11 of the last 15 after pouring in 35 to go along with 10 assists on Friday versus San Antonio. All five starters scored in double-figures Friday including 20 from Dario Saric – his highest output since Dec. 9. Center Aron Baynes (hip) is listed as questionable for Sunday and may miss his fourth straight contest. The Suns, who are the third-best free throw shooting team in the league (81 percent), are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games.
Forward Jaren Jackson led the way in Detroit on Friday with 29 points on 10-of-14 shooting as the Grizzlies drained 54.4 percent of their field goals and 11-of-22 from beyond the arc. Likely Rookie of the Year Ja Morant added 16 points and 12 assists, while Dillon Brooks (27) and Brandon Clarke (15) combined for 42 points. Shooting guard Grayson Allen, who shoots 36.3 percent from 3-point land, left Friday’s game with hip soreness and is questionable for Sunday.
Memphis’ offense is on a roll right now, scoring above their season average in 10 of their last 12 games. They already beat Phoenix twice on the road and should be able to take care of them at home.
