The South Carolina Gamecocks open the 2015 season with a trip up to Charlotte to take on North Carolina. South Carolina is coming off a disappointing 7-6 season that ended with an Independence Bowl win over Miami FL. They lost a lot on offense last year as their starting quarterback, running back, and 4 of their top 5 receivers are gone. Sophomore Connor Mitch will take over at QB this year with not much experience to back him up. The defense returns 8 starters from last year including their top 3 tacklers. Steve Spurrier enters his 11th season as South Carolina’s coach. He is 84-45 with a 5-4 Bowl record.

North Carolina could be a team on the rise as they return 10 starters on offense and 7 on defense. QB Marquise Williams had a fine year in 2014 passing for 21 touchdowns to 9 interceptions. He was also the teams leading rusher with over 1,000 yards and another 13 TD’s on the ground. He also has his leading receivers back including Ryan Switzer who caught 61 passes last year and Mack Hollins who hauled in 8 touchdowns. This game will be played in Charlotte and the last time the Tar Heels played here, they won the 2013 Belk Bowl over Cincinnati 39-17. Larry Fedora starts his 4th season as North Carolina’s head coach. He is 55-36 overall with North Carolina and Southern Miss (’08-’11).
South Carolina seems to be going on a downward trend and I don’t like their lack of experience at QB. North Carolina can score and they’re playing close to home tonight. The Gamecocks were embarrassed on opening night last year against Texas A&M.
Pick: North Carolina +2.5
