The South Carolina Gamecocks are looking to avoid a third consecutive loss when they travel to Gainesville to take on the 12th-ranked Florida Gators on Tuesday night. Just a week ago, the Gators and Gamecocks were locked in a three-way tie with Kentucky atop the SEC standings, but a home loss to Arkansas and a defeat at Vanderbilt have pretty much eliminated South Carolina’s title hopes. The Gamecocks are ranked 16th in the country in field-goal defense, holding the opposition to 39.4%, but they’ve allowed four straight opponents to shoot 42% or better. They have also had trouble scoring enough points to make up for the struggles on defense, ranking 296th in the nation in field goal percentage (42.0). Leading scorer Sindarius Thornwell (20.2 points, seven rebounds) continues to shine for the Gamecocks and has accounted for 36.5% of the Gamecocks’ scoring over the last five games. He’s going to need more help against the Gators and that includes guards PJ Dozier (13.8 points, 4.5 rebounds) and Duane Notice (10.2 points), as well as big man Chris Silva (10.1, 5.9 rebounds). South Carolina has forced at least 15 turnovers in all but one SEC game and are averaging 18.5 per game in conference play.

Florida remains tied with the Wildcats and have a huge trip to Kentucky this Saturday. The Gators have won eight straight since a two-game slide that began with a 57-53 loss at South Carolina on January 18th. The Gators are coming off an unusual week during which they scored an SEC-record 114 points in a win at Auburn on Tuesday and squeezed out a 57-52 victory at Mississippi State four days later. Florida lost leading scorer Canyon Barry (13.2 points) to a sprained ankle against the Bulldogs, and his status versus South Carolina will be a game-time decision. Florida is already missing center John Egbunu (knee). Forward Kevarrius Hayes stepped in for Egbunu and recorded eight points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots against Mississippi State. If Barry can’t go, the Gators will be left with just two players – KeVaughn Allen (13.1 points) and Devin Robinson (11.1, 5.8 rebounds) – who average double digits in points. Florida’s defense hold opponents to an 11th-ranked 30.2% three-point shooting percentage.

The Gators are hurting right now, but should still win this game. South Carolina plays well enough defense and is hungry for a win. That, along with the fact they are 10-1 ATS in their last 11 trips to Gainesville, gives me confidence they will cover the double-digit spread.
Pick: South Carolina +10
