The Kansas City Royals free fall from the top of the American League Central continued this past weekend as the Royals have now lost 9 of their last 12 games. The Texas Rangers won 2 out of 3 in Kansas City and the Royals only scored 6 runs in the three games. If you dig even further, they have scored only 11 runs in their last 9 loses. They begin an important 3-game series in Minnesota tonight.

Jason Vargas will be on the mound tonight to try and stop the slide. He has started 7 games this year and in 5 of those games, he has let up exactly 2 runs in each of those and Kansas City has won 4 of those 5. They way the Royals have been scoring, he might need to do even better than that. Oddly enough, his worst two starts this year have been against the Twins. In 8 2/3 innings he’s allowed 18 hits and 10 runs against Minnesota.

The Minnesota Twins have been maybe the surprise of the league so far. Winners of 10 of their last 15 they find themselves in 1st place in the American League Central. Though they rank near the bottom of the majors in both OPS and home runs, they are ranked 6th in runs scored at 4.41 a game. They don’t even have a .300 hitter on the roster. I don’t see them keeping up their winning ways for too much longer.

Tonight’s starter is Phil Hughes and he hasn’t been that great this year. In 11 starts he is 4-5 with a 4.96 ERA and only 45 strikeouts in 69 innings. He only last 4 1/3 innings last week in Boston allowing 11 hits and 5 runs. This will be his first start against Kansas City this year. He was 2-2 in 4 starts against them last year.

This is a tough one to call. The Twins are slight favorites being at home. Vargas has been bad against the Twins this year, but I also don’t trust Hughes. I can’t take the over, because the Royals are having a hard time scoring. I’ll just stick with the home team tonight and hope the Royals don’t break out of their funk.

Pick: Twins -108
