Boston (59-54) at NY Yankees (71-39)
When: Sunday, August 4th, 2019
Where: Yankee Stadium,
Bronx, New York
Time: 7:05 ET | TV: ESPN
Opening Odds: OFF
The Boston Red Sox and their postseason hopes are being quickly dashed by their hated rival and they’ll look to salvage one game of their four-game weekend series when they square-off with the New York Yankees on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball. Boston took the first three games from New York at Fenway Park last weekend by a combined 38-13, but haven’t won a game since, dropping the finale last Sunday night, then three to Tampa Bay and now the first three in Yankee Stadium. The seven game losing streak has the Red Sox now 13.5 games behind New York and 5.5 behind the Rays for the second wild card spot in the American League. The Yankees have won four straight and five of six since dropping three in a row to Boston last weekend and received a pair of home runs from DJ LeMahieu in Saturday’s opener before Gleyber Torres went deep twice in the nightcap. New York, despite seemingly having half their roster on the injured list at some point this season, is percentage points ahead of Houston for the best record in the American League. The Yankees will head to Baltimore on Monday to begin a seven game road trip while Boston comes home for seven games beginning with Kansas City.
Pitchers: Red Sox – David Price (7-4, 3.86 ERA) | Yankees – J.A. Happ (8-6, 5.19)
David Price still has a respectable 3.86 ERA, but he’s on a run of four-straight sub-par outings including his last two outings – both against Tampa Bay. With the Boston bullpen worn out from yesterday’s double-header, Price will try and give them more than the 4.1 innings he pitched on Tuesday. He allowed four runs and nine hits against the Rays and has completed six innings in one of his last five outings. Price was strong in his only outing against the Yankees this season, pitching 6.1 innings while allowing two runs and six hits in the victory on June 2nd.

J.A. Happ rebounded from a rough outing at Minnesota – six runs in 3.1 innings – to limit the Diamondbacks to three runs over six innings of a 4-2 loss on Tuesday. It was the first time he completed six innings since June 6th at Toronto despite allowing three runs or less in five of his eight starts since. The Yankees have won both games Happ has started against Boston this season, allowing four runs in 11.1 innings of work.
It’s hard not to take New York again on Sunday to sweep the four-game series. Boston can’t buy a win lately and Price has been bad lately. This could be slugfest with the Yankees pulling it out.
