The Cleveland Indians are coming off a huge weekend against the first place Minnesota Twins and look to carry that momentum back home when they open a three-game set with the Boston Red Sox on Monday. Cleveland went to Minneapolis on Thursday trailing the Twins by two games, but took three of four to get even with them in the AL Central capped by a 7-3 victory on Sunday. The Twins had an 11.5 game lead over the Indians on June 2nd, but Cleveland is an MLB-best 42-17 since June 4th. Carlos Santana blasted a tie-breaking grand slam in the top of the 10th inning Sunday to give him a club-leading 25 homers and 70 RBI. Newly acquired Yasiel Puig added an RBI double and is 15-for-42 with six RBI over 11 games since joining the team from Cincinnati. The Red Sox are quickly fading away and are coming off a four-game split at home against the Los Angeles Angels over the weekend to fall 7.5 games behind Tampa Bay in the wild card race after a 3-11 stretch. J.D. Martinez extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a single in Sunday’s 5-4 loss in 10 innings for Boston. Catcher Christian Vazquez belted his 18th homer on Sunday after a combined 10 dingers over his previous four seasons. Yes folks, the ball is juiced.
Pitchers: Red Sox – Eduardo Rodriguez (13-5, 4.17 ERA) | Indians – Zach Plesac (6-3, 3.13)
Eduardo Rodriguez might have a high ERA, but he’s going after a career-high 14th win on Monday and has limited opponents to two or fewer runs in six of his past eight outings. One of those was last Wednesday against Kansas City when he held the Royals to two runs on seven hits over five innings in a no-decision. Rodriguez has allowed four runs over two starts covering 13.2 innings against the Indians.

Zach Plesac is having a fine rookie season and has allowed two runs or less in four of his last five outings including six scoreless frames against Texas last time out. Plesac made his major league debut against Boston back in May and allowed one run on four hits and a walk while throwing 86 pitches.
This is a simple case of two teams going in different directions. With Minnesota off, the Indians have a chance to take sole-possession of first place and that could be motivation enough to get past the fading Red Sox.
