Cincinnati (56-60) at Washington (62-55)
When: Monday, August 12th, 2019
Where: Nationals Park,
Washington, DC
Time: 7:05 ET | TV: FS Ohio, MASN2
Opening Odds: Washington -137/9.5

The Cincinnati Reds’ surge up the wild card standings took a little hit on Sunday when they failed to hold a three-run lead against the Chicago Cubs. The loss was just their second in seven games and the Reds are still within five games of the second NL Wild Card spot with five teams ahead of them after Sunday’s 6-3 loss to Chicago. Cincinnati will now embark on a brief three-game road trip in the Nation’s Capital to take on a Washington team that is currently holding the top wild card spot. Reds rookie Aristides Aquino, who was called-up from the minors when Yasiel Puig was traded, failed to hit a home run yesterday, but has seven dingers to go with 14 RBI during an eight-game hitting streak and tied the major league record for most homers (7) by a player in his first 10 contests. The Nationals salvaged a terrible weekend in New York and avoided the series sweep with a 7-4 over the surging Mets, but not all news was good. Outfielder Juan Soto, who who is second on the team to Anthony Rendon in homers (24) and RBIs (77), turned his ankle rounding third base in Sunday’s win and is listed as day-to-day. Victor Robles replaced Soto and delivered his 15th homer of the season to give the Nationals some insurance runs in the ninth inning.

Pitchers: Reds – Anthony DeSclafani (7-6, 4.20 ERA) | Nationals – Erick Fedde (2-2, 4.20)

The Reds are just 2-4 in Anthony DeSclafani’s last six starts and lack of run support has been an issue. DeSclafani allowed three runs or less in all four of those Reds’ losses in that stretch, but managed to get a win last time out despite allowing four runs and five hits over 5.1 innings versus the Los Angeles Angels. He is 2-0 with a 2.17 ERA in seven appearances (four starts) versus Washington.

Erick Fedde has been pretty consistent in replacing ace Max Scherzer (back strain) in the rotation outside of one poor outing that has skewed his overall ERA. He was tagged for for nine runs and nine hits over 3.2 innings in a loss to Atlanta on July 30th but followed that with six scoreless innings at San Francisco last Monday. Fedde gave up two runs over four innings in a no-decision at Cincinnati on June 1st.

Washington is still playing well despite a rough weekend in New York and should be able to handle the Reds here. DeSclafani is hittable and the Reds are just 23-32 away from home.
