The Toronto Raptors and Atlanta Hawks will square off Friday night at Philips Arena in what could be a preview of a first round playoff matchup. If the season ended today, the fourth-seeded Raptors would host the fifth-seeded Hawks. Toronto will be missing a key piece to their lineup tonight as point guard Kyle Lowry has been ruled out until at least the end of the regular season with a wrist injury as backup Cory Joseph will get most of the starts in his place. The Raptors are 2-1 on their five-game road trip with stops remaining against the Hawks and the Miami Heat after a 94-87 win at New Orleans on Wednesday. Starting center Jonas Valanciunas broke out for 25 points and 13 rebounds on Wednesday and was a big part of the fourth quarter after sitting out the final period in the previous seven games. Another injury concern for Toronto is small forward DeMarre Carroll (ankle), who sat out Wednesday and is listed as day-to-day. All-Star shooting guard DeMar DeRozan (27.4 points/game) is in a shooting slump, scoring and combined 25 points in the past two games on 10-of-28 shooting.

Atlanta has dropped three straight games against playoff contenders but bounced back on Wednesday by holding off the lowly Brooklyn Nets 110-105 at home. The Hawks received a solid effort against the Nets from point guard Dennis Schroder who scored 31 points in the win. Schroder was benched in the second half of Monday’s 119-111 loss to the Golden State Warriors for arguing with center Dwight Howard in the middle of a play but had long talks with both coach Mike Budenholzer and All-Star forward Paul Millsap after the game. Schroder added five assists and three steals to his 31 points on Wednesday to lead the way. Millsap had 24 points in the win and is enjoying a season-best streak of four straight games scoring 20 or more. Howard is averaging 15.7 rebounds over the last three games to increase his season average to 12.9. The teams split the first two meetings, with Atlanta earning a 125-121 win at Toronto on December 16th in the most recent matchup.

I don’t like the way either team is playing right now, but the loss of Lowry really hurts the Raptors and the home team has covered four of the last five meetings. I think Atlanta gets it done tonight.
Pick: Hawks -2
