The Texas Rangers and Baltimore Orioles begin a three-game series Tuesday night with the Rangers coming in as big winners in the trade-deadline market yesterday. Texas managed to get two All-Stars in right fielder Carlos Beltran from the New York Yankees and catcher Jonathan Lucroy from the Milwaukee Brewers. The Rangers now have one of the best offenses in baseball and are now ready to hold off the Houston Astros in the AL West. The Orioles were in the market for starting pitching but could not pull off the deal for the top-of-the-rotation starter they were seeking and instead grabbed lefty Wade Miley from the Seattle Mariners. Baltimore is locked in a three-way battle in the AL East with the Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox and snapped a five-game losing streak with a 12-inning win over the Blue Jays on Sunday. The O’s begin the night with a half game lead over Toronto and 1.5 over Boston. Rangers 1B Mitch Moreland is 8-for-13 with four home runs in the last four games while the Orioles’ Chris Davis is 4-for-43 with 20 strikeouts over his last 12 games.
Pitchers: Texas – Yu Darvish (2-2, 3.09 ERA) | Orioles – Dylan Bundy (3-3, 3.46)
Yu Darvish will make his fourth start since returning from the disabled list on July 16th. He is 0-2 in his last three starts, but has only allowed two earned runs in each game while striking out 26 in 16.1 innings. Darvish is winless in two starts on the road this year despite striking out 20 in 10.1 innings.
Dylan Bundy is racking up the strikeouts as well with 13 in his last two starts covering 10.2 innings. Bundy took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before surrendering a pair of home runs to the Colorado Rockies and taking the loss last Wednesday. Bundy worked three perfect innings of relief at Texas on June 20th, striking out three.
Beltran and Lucroy should pay dividends right away for Texas and Darvish should have no problem getting some better run support. Darvish looks pretty good despite missing most of the season and will be an important piece to Texas’ playoff run. Bundy hasn’t pitched into the 7th inning in his three starts this season and I believe he will get hit hard tonight.
Pick: Rangers -110
