The Chicago Cubs are back to the .500 mark for the 20th time this season, but will be looking for back-to-back wins for the first time since mid-June when they host the Pittsburgh Pirates in the middle game of a three-game set on Saturday night. The Cubs took the series opener on Friday 6-1 thanks to a big game from Kris Bryant. The star third baseman went 4-for-5 with two homers and four RBIs and is a career .384 hitter with 15 doubles, one triple, 10 home runs, and 34 RBIs in 44 games against the Pirates. The Cubs will be looking from a solid outing from Jake Arrieta after seeing Eddie Butler last only four innings Friday. Arrieta’s career numbers against the Pirates remain spectacular, but after going 9-1 with a 1.46 ERA in the first 12 meetings, he is 0-3 with a 7.81 ERA in his past five starts against Pittsburgh. Friday’s loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Pirates, who tied their season-high with three errors and had a streak of 13.1 scoreless innings from their bullpen come to an end. Gregory Polanco, who is 12-for-28 during a seven-game hitting streak, left six men on base in Friday’s setback. OF Andrew McCutchen continues to inch closer to .300 after collecting three more hits on Friday – the third time in four games he has done so.

Ivan Nova looks to break-out of a mini-slum as he has failed to record quality start in his last three outings. That comes on the heels of seven quality outings in his previous eight starts. Nova suffered the loss at Philadelphia on Monday, allowing four runs and seven hits over six innings in a 4-0 defeat. Nova beat the Cubs on June 17th in Pittsburgh, limiting them to three runs and six hits in seven innings.
Arrieta turned in his best outing of the season Sunday at Cincinnati, holding the Reds to one hit over seven scoreless innings. Arrieta has followed-up a quality start with another just twice this season. He’s been much better at home this season, posting a 3-0 mark and a 3.86 ERA in five Wrigley starts.

The Cubs haven’t won two games in a row for a while now and Arrieta seems to follow a good outing with a bad. I’m not willing to lay that much money on him or the Cubs right now.
