Two struggling NL Central teams will begin a weekend series Friday night at Busch Stadium, as the St. Louis Cardinals host the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Cardinals are coming off an awful road trip in which they lost all five games to Oakland and the L.A. Dodgers while scoring a total of seven runs and will try to avoid a season-high six-game losing streak behind Dakota Hudson on Friday against Pittsburgh. St. Louis briefly took over the division lead after a 12-2 run but are now four games behind the Chicago Cubs entering the weekend and a half-game behind the second wild card spot pending Thursday’s late action. Shortstop Paul DeJong is one home run shy of becoming the first shortstop in Cardinals’ history with multiple 20-homer seasons. Pittsburgh, meanwhile, has fallen completely off the map since the All-Star Break and sit 11 games out of a wild card spot because of their 4-21 record since the break. Catcher Jacob Stallings hit a solo homer in Wednesday’s 8-3 loss to Milwaukee to extend Pittsburgh’s consecutive-games streak with at least one extra-base hit to 58. St. Louis holds a 9-4 edge in the season series after taking each of the last five meetings.
Pitchers: Pirates – Chris Archer (3-8, 5.35 ERA) | Cardinals – Dakota Hudson (10-6, 3.99)
The Pirates have lost Chris Archer’s last five starts and gave him very little support last time out against the New York Mets. Archer was solid with six innings of one-run ball, but the Pirates went on to lose the game 7-5. Archer’s outing was encouraging after he had allowed three runs or more in each of his previous five starts and he has failed to record a win in his last 10 outings. Archers is 0-1 with a 3.71 ERA in three starts against St. Louis this season.

Dakota Hudson has not fared well lately either, allowing three runs or more in six of his last seven outings including an 8-3 loss at Oakland on Saturday in which he walked a season-high five batters and took his second consecutive loss. He did strike out seven but allowed four runs (three earned) in 3.2 innings. Hudson is 2-0 with a 3.12 ERA in six games (two starts) against Pittsburgh.
All signs seem to point to the over with these two pitchers, but the offense’s don’t really back that play. The Cardinals return home and should be able to have success this weekend against the fading Pirates.
