The Pittsburgh Pirates’ offense comes in with some momentum after bashing the Houston Astros staff and will get their chance against a struggling Jhoulys Chacin in the opener of a three-game weekend series on Friday night. Pittsburgh has won six of its last seven games after defeating Houston 10-0 on Thursday and 14-2 on Wednesday, and are five games behind the first-place Chicago Cubs in the NL Central. Milwaukee, however, has won six of the first seven meetings this season, including a three-game sweep at Miller Park by a combined 20-9 earlier this month. Pirates shortstop Kevin Newman owns the majors longest current hitting streak at 17 games, during which he is batting .390 with three home runs, 13 RBI and 11 runs scored. Josh Bell has homered in two straight games and drove in four runs after not recording an RBI in his previous five games. The Brewers have lost seven of their last 10 but still trail the Cubs by just one game after defeating Seattle 4-2 on Thursday to salvage the finale of their three-game series. Chacin, who has an ERA over 10 in his last three starts, will be opposed by the equally struggling Chris Archer – which is why this total is set at a very high 10.5.
Pitchers: Pirates – Chris Archer (3-6, 5.56 ERA) | Brewers – Jhoulys Chacin (3-8, 5.88)
Archer has sandwiched two solid outings around a couple of duds in his last four starts, but the Pirates offense has been giving him some good run support, winning four of his last five starts. He allowed one run, two hits and three walks while striking out five over five innings of Pittsburgh’s 6-3 victory over San Diego on Saturday but came away with a no-decision. Archer surrendered 11 runs over 11 innings in his previous two starts. Archer is 1-2 with a 6.14 ERA in four starts against the Brewers including a 9-4 victory on May 31st.

Chacin won a career-best 15 games a year ago, but is now on pace to have his worst season of his 10-year run, including those seasons in Colorado. He lasted only 4.2 innings last Saturday against Cincinnati after allowing five runs and six hits while striking out five in his second start since coming off the injured list (back). Chacin, who is winless in his last seven starts (0-5), is 2-7 with a 4.96 ERA in 13 starts against the Pirates.
Boy, which pitcher do I trust the most here? I would love to take the over, but 10.5 is really high and as bad as Chacin has been, nine of his 14 starts have gone under. The Pirates are playing – and hitting – a little better right now, so I’ll take my chances with Archer and the Pittsburgh offense.
