Opening Odds: San Diego -116/8.5

Two teams looking to move up the wild card standings in the National League will begin a three-game series Friday, as the St. Louis Cardinals visit the San Diego Padres at Petco Park. Just a half-game separate the two, but it’s San Diego that comes in with more momentum, sweeping a two-game interleague series at Baltimore in impressive fashion. In the Padres’ last three series, they swept the Milwaukee Brewers at home, got swept in three games at Pittsburgh, before rebounding against the MLB-worst Orioles. The San Diego offense has averaged 7.5 runs per game over their last four series and will look to keep that going this weekend after taking two of three in St. Louis in early April. The Cardinals ended their nine-game homestand by dropping the last three including a 2-0 shutout against Oakland in which they managed just five hits. It was the third time the Cardinals have been shutout in their last 14 games, but yet they’re only three games back of the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central standings. Michael Wacha will take the mound for St. Louis looking for back-to-back quality starts for the first time this season when he opposes lefty Eric Lauer.

Pitchers: Cardinals – Michael Wacha (5-3, 5.59 ERA) | Padres – Eric Lauer (5-7, 4.32)

Wacha has been unable to carry a strong start into the next game all season and he’s coming off a gem last time out when he held the Los Angeles Angels to one run and five hits over six innings last Friday. He was rocked in his previous start by the New York Mets to the tune of six runs – five earned – and seven hits over four innings of work and allowed two home runs. Wacha came away with a no-decision back on April 6th against San Diego after allowing one run on three hits in 5.2 innings, but walked eight batters in throwing 119 pitches.

The Padres took 2 of 3 in St. Louis earlier this season.

The Padres have lost the last three games Lauer has started despite pitching well in the latest one. He was tagged in his previous start in a wild weekend at Coors Field against Colorado and allowed five runs and 10 hits in just 2.2 innings, but rebounded versus the Pirates. Lauer allowed just one earned run in seven innings of a 2-1 loss in that one. He has allowed eight runs over two starts covering eight innings against St. Louis in his short career – both last season.

The Cardinals are not very good on the road (16-21) and don’t come in with a lot of momentum, or offense. The Padres bats have come alive over the last few weeks and should be able to get to Wacha. Lauer has been much better at home, posting a 2.70 ERA at Petco Park.
