We’ve covered a lot of future odds bets this summer in anticipation of the upcoming season, but this next one is one of my favorites – NFL Coach of the Year odds. This award isn’t like an MVP ballot where the best stats usually get you the hardware. Coaches who are expected to have mediocre seasons and maybe finish second or third in their division, but then surprise everyone, can easily win it. When we look at this year’s odds, you’ll see that rookie head coach Vance Joseph of the Denver Broncos is the second choice at +900. His team is expected to finish third in the division behind the Raiders and Chiefs, but if he can make the right call on his quarterback situation, he could every easily win the AFC West or even get a wild card spot.
The odds-on favorite is of course New England’s Bill Belichick at +600. He was won the award three times (2004, 2007, 2010) and won at least 14 games in each of those seasons. If you want a real longshot, take a look at the bottom of this list where you will see Indianapolis’ Chuck Pagano (+4000). The Colts are in a weak division and the odds on them making the playoffs and maybe even winning a game, are not that bad. Jason Garrett won the award last year and had preseason odds of +3000. Keep in mind, 11 wins and a postseason appearance has won this award since 2000. I would take a shot with Jack Del Rio of the Raiders. I think they have a big season behind Derek Carr.
