Both the Washington Nationals and Philadelphia Phillies enter the final week of August looking to turn things around and each are coming off easy victories on Sunday. The Phillies will begin a six-game homestand with the first of three against their NL East-rivals on Monday night as Zach Eflin faces Stephen Strasburg for the second time in less than a week. Philadelphia sits three games behind National League East-leading Atlanta and had lost six of seven before the offense broke-out with four home runs in Sunday’s 8-3 triumph versus Toronto to avoid the weekend sweep. Rhys Hoskins went 4-for-12 with four RBIs and two runs scored against the Blue Jays after going 1-for-13 with five strikeouts in the previous series versus Washington. The Nationals were shutout three consecutive days after an 8-7 win over the Phillies on Wednesday, but erupted for 15 runs in their shutout victory over the New York Mets on Sunday. Mark Reynolds belted his sixth career grand slam in a six-run ninth inning for the Nationals, who have won just five of 14 overall and six of 13 versus the Phillies this season. Philadelphia catcher Wilson Ramos is 12-for-25 with seven extra-base hits (five doubles, triple, homer) and eight RBIs in six games since being acquired from Tampa Bay.

Strasburg struggled last week against the Phillies in his first start since missing more than a month with a neck injury. He allowed five runs – including two homers – over four innings in the victory on Wednesday. Strasburg will make his 200th major league appearance Monday and has a 10-2 record with a 2.48 ERA in 22 career starts versus the Phillies.
Eflin didn’t even last as long as Strasburg in that Wednesday outing, allowing five runs on 10 hits over 3.1 innings of a no-decision. Eflin faced Washington earlier in the season and held them to two runs on six hits across five innings in a blowout win.
With both pitchers struggling and coming off an 8-7 game just last week, I have to go over in this one. Strasburg’s last three starts have gone over and five of Eflin’s eight home starts has as well.
