The New York Islanders have been sitting at home for about a week, resting their tired and aching bodies, watching the Carolina Hurricanes and Washington Capitals battle in what has been a physical, but terrific series. It all comes down to a Game 7 on Wednesday night in the Nation’s Capital, and they way this series is going, the home team has the advantage. Both teams have held serve on home ice in all six games thus far, but the Hurricanes have the ultimate Game 7 magician on their side. Captain Justin Williams has been involved in eight Game 7s in his career and his teams have won seven of those, with the exception when he was with the Capitals. He not only has a great track record in series finales, but he’s scored seven times and set up seven other goals in those eight contests as well. Carolina forced a Game 7 with a 5-2 win over Washington in Game 6 after the Capitals thought they had tied the game at 3-3, but Alex Ovechkin’s goal was reversed by replay. The Russian star was clearly frustrated after that, going after any player he could hit, then a slashing penalty – along with mocking the refs – ultimately got him a 10-minute misconduct late in the game. Carolina is the 10th NHL club in the Expansion Era to force a Game 7 in the opening round against the defending Stanley Cup champion.
Rookie Warren Foegele is coming of age quickly this postseason, recording eight points (six goals, two assists) in his last eight games after netting a goal on Monday, but he has just one point in the three games in D.C. Jordan Staal recorded two points for the second time this series after scoring and assisting in the Game 6 triumph. Veteran defenseman Dougie Hamilton is tied for the team lead in points (six) after his second two-point performance of the series on Monday. Goalie Petr Mrazek owns a .950 save percentage and 2.68 GAA in the first six games.

Despite a goal being disallowed and getting tossed late in the contest, Ovechkin still scored a goal for the third straight game and has four goals and three assists in Game 7s. Center Nicklas Backstrom is tied with Ovechkin for the team lead of eight points, and all of those have come in the three home games after being held off the scoresheet in the games in Carolina. Goalie Braden Holtby owns a 3-4 mark in Game 7s despite posting a 1.81 goals-against average and .934 save percentage.
This has been a fun series to watch and I expect Game 7 to be just as entertaining. I’d like to see this Carolina team advance, but the Capitals not only have the experience on their side, but the home team has yet to lose a game in this series. I’ll lay the big price here and take Washington.
Pick: Capitals -155
