There are only three games on tonight’s NBA schedule and the first one up features two teams likely to miss the playoffs. The Charlotte Hornets just ended a brutal stretch in their schedule that saw them lose three of their last four games, but have actually played well. Charlotte is a perfect 6-0 ATS in their last six contests that includes four teams near the top of their respective conference standings. One of those victories came on Saturday in the form of a 108-99 upset win at home over the Houston Rockets as 8.5-point underdogs. That puts the Hornets six games behind the Orlando Magic for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Sitting at the bottom are the Atlanta Hawks, whose defense has been bad all season and even worse lately. The Hawks have allowed 117 points or more in seven straight contests including a 118-101 loss at the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday. They also lost to the Grizzlies five days earlier and managed to put up only 88 points, starting a string of three straight ATS setbacks. The Hawks are beginning a three-game homestand Monday and enter Sunday’s action in a virtual tie with Cleveland at the bottom of the East. Atlanta came away with a 122-107 road win at Charlotte back in December and the teams will play twice more over the next month.
Charlotte was led by Terry Rozier’s 24 points in the win over Houston on Saturday, as the Hornets scored the game’s first 20 points. Rozier is 11-of-18 from 3-point range over his last two games. Devonte’ Graham added 23 points, while rookie forward P.J. Washington chipped in 22 on 8-of-11 shooting. The Hornets are the league’s worst scoring (102.2) and shooting team (43.3 percent) and have been held under 100 points in four of their last eight games including under 90 in three of those. The Hornets will be at the Miami Heat on Wednesday.
Atlanta ranks second-to-last in scoring defense (119.2), which means something has to give versus the offensively-inept Hornets. All-Star guard Trae Young missed Friday’s loss at Washington due to flu-like symptoms and wasn’t 100 percent in the setback to Memphis, scoring 16 points on 4-of-16 shooting. John Collins led the team with 27 points on Saturday and is averaging 24.9 since the start of February. Shooting guard Kevin Huerter chipped in 11 points and has made multiple three-pointers in six straight games. The Hawks have won five of their last seven and eight of their last 11 at home. Atlanta will host the New York Knicks on Wednesday.
Charlotte is definitely playing better than Atlanta right now, covering each of their last six games, and are still fighting for a playoff spot. Look for the Hornets to get their offense going and possibly win this game outright.
