The San Francisco Giants got themselves into the thick of the National League wild card race with a big run that started in July but have since tailed-off and need to get back on track before it’s too late. The Oakland A’s are on the opposite end of momentum and are coming off an impressive three game sweep of the New York Yankees. The two Bay Area rivals will meet this weekend in a key two-game set in Oakland beginning Saturday night with Madison Bumgarner going for San Fran against Oakland’s Chris Bassitt. The A’s swept the AL-best New York Yankees earlier this week to pull even with the Tampa Bay Rays and a half-game back of Cleveland in the race for the two AL wild card spots after winning six of seven against the American League’s best (Yankees, Houston). Mark Canha is 12-for-28 with two home runs, eight RBI and four runs scored during a seven-game hitting streak that has helped Oakland improve to a season-high 21 games above .500. The Giants blew a chance to improve their wild card chances in the National League but were swept in a three-game series by the Cubs in Chicago this week and have dropped four in a row to reside six games back. The teams split their two games last week back in San Francisco.
Pitchers: Giants – Madison Bumgarner (8-8, 3.72 ERA) | Athletics – Chris Bassitt (9-5, 3.61)
Bumgarner suffered his first loss in over two months last time out when he allowed four runs, six hits and two walks with nine strikeouts over six innings of a 6-1 loss at Arizona on Sunday. His last setback came on June 20th against the Dodgers and he compiled a 5-0 mark and 2.61 ERA until his loss to the D’backs. Bumgarner is 5-2 with a 4.32 ERA in eight starts against the Athletics.
Bassitt has been on a roll lately, posting three scoreless outings over his last seven turns, but two of those were to the Chicago White Sox. He’s coming off a win over Houston last weekend when he allowed three runs, eight hits and two walks over six innings of an 8-4 victory. Bassitt has faced the Giants just once in his career and lost in 2015 after allowing two runs and five hits over six frames.
This is a case of two teams going in opposite directions. I think the Giants are completely done and the A’s are just getting started. Bassitt has been pitching well enough to get the edge here. Look for a low-scoring Oakland victory.
