LA Dodgers (7-2) at Colorado (3-6)
When: Sunday, April 7th, 2019
Where: Coors Field,
Denver, Colorado
Time: 8:37 ET | TV: ESPN
Opening Odds: Los Angeles -140/11
Two teams heading in opposite directions this young MLB season will battle on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball from Coors Field as the Colorado Rockies host the slugging Los Angeles Dodgers. It has been a brutal start for Colorado, who is still expected to contend for an NL West title with the Dodgers, but just over a week into the season and the Rockies are already four games back with no offense in site. Colorado ranks near the bottom of the league in most offensive categories and have lost six over their last seven after opening the season with two victories in Miami. David Dahl went 3-for-4 in Saturday’s 7-2 setback to raise his average to a team-leading .353, but he’s the only player hitting over .263. The Dodgers, meanwhile, go for the three-game sweep and have extended their franchise record for consecutive games hitting a home run to nine to begin a season. First baseman Cody Bellinger is already having an MVP-type season with a major league-leading six home runs and 17 RBI after a run scoring triple on Saturday. While most of the team is hitting the cover off the ball, shortstop Cody Bellinger is having a rough start after missing most of 2018 with an injury. The former first round pick is 6-for-32 (.188) with just one extra-base hit (HR). The Dodgers have now won seven in a row against their Rocky Mountain foes.
Pitchers: Dodgers – Julio Urias (0-0, 0.00 ERA) | Rockies – Chad Bettis (0-1, 9.53)
Like Bellinger, tonight’s starter Julio Urias missed most of least season and made his first start in almost two years on Monday after an impressive Spring Training in which he held the opposition to an .098 batting average. Urias allowed three hits while striking out seven in five innings of work, but received a no-decision against San Francisco. Urias was hit hard by the Rockies in his last encounter with them, allowing seven hits and six runs in four innings of a 9-6 loss on May 14th, 2017 at Coors Field.
Chad Bettis will look to keep the ball in the park Sunday, something that hurt him in his season debut in St. Petersburg last Monday. The Tampa Bay Rays hit Bettis for seven hits and six runs including a three-run homer and a two-run shot in 5.2 innings. The righty from Lubbock, Texas pitched much better on the road last season then at Coors Field, where he had a 7.08 ERA in 17 appearances (10 starts). Bettis is 2-2 with a 4.85 ERA in 16 career appearances (11 starts) against the Dodgers but was solid in an August start here last season (6.1 innings, one run).
This might seem like a lot to lay on the road in Coors Field, but this Dodger team is hot right now and the Rockies are scuffling. Bettis was horrible at home in 2018 and I don’t see him turning it around quite yet. L.A. gets the sweep here.
