The New York Mets are doing their best to stay in the National League wild card race and look for the series win against the Los Angeles Dodgers on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball with Zack Wheeler opposing fellow righty Walker Buehler. The Dodgers still own a three-game lead over the Atlanta Braves for the NL’s best record, but the Mets are three game of the suddenly hot Chicago Cubs for the second wild card spot. New York dropped the series opener 9-2 on Friday and did nothing against Dodgers lefty Hyun-Jin Ryu through seven innings on Saturday eventually broke through. Rajai Davis’ three-run, pinch-hit double in the eighth was enough for the 3-0 victory. It was the fifth win in six games for the Mets despite star slugger Pete Alonso going 0-for-15 in his last five contests. L.A., who clinched a playoff berth on Thursday, managed just three singles off New York ace Jacob deGrom on Saturday.
Pitchers: Dodgers – Walker Buehler (13-3, 3.14 ERA) | Mets – Zack Wheeler (11-7, 4.21)
Buehler had no trouble with the lowly Baltimore Orioles last time out, limiting them to four hits over seven scoreless innings while striking out 11 in the 7-3 victory. It was a nice bounce back from a rough outing at home against Colorado in which he allowed six runs and eight hits over five innings. Buehler’s only start against the Mets came back in May when he surrendered five runs and seven hits in five innings.
Free agent-to-be Wheeler has been humming along after a rough three-star stretch in August to post three consecutive one-run outings. He earned his 11th win last time out against Arizona after scattering seven hits over as many innings to improve to 6-2 at home. Wheeler has allowed 14 runs over 16 career innings against the Dodgers (three starts).
The Mets have been very streaky in the second half and right now they’re on a good run. They have more to play for than L.A. and Wheeler has been very good over his last three starts. I expect a low-scoring game with the Mets pulling it out as a nice home dog here.
