The Cincinnati Reds made a lot of moves in the offseason in order to compete in the competitive National League Central and the team is starting to click after a disastrous start to 2019. After beating the Pittsburgh Pirates on Opening Day, the Reds proceeded to drop their next eight games, scoring a total of 16 runs and being shutout four times. A visit from Miami this week cured those woes as they outscored the Marlins 21-1 in sweeping a three-game set. They will now take on their division-rival St. Louis Cardinals for a two-game series in Monterrey, Mexico beginning Saturday night. The Cardinals also started off slow, but are coming off an impressive four-game sweep of the previously red-hot Los Angeles Dodgers. St. Louis outscored the Dodgers 26-12 including an 11-7 slugfest on Thursday to extend their winning streak to six. The Cardinals boast the only Mexican-born player on either roster in Giovanny Gallegos, and he’s looking forward to playing in the 27,000 seat Estadio de Beisbol stadium. “So many people in Mexico will enjoy those games,” said Gallegos. “It’s good for the kids because so many people in Mexico, they can’t come to the U.S. to watch big league games.” Cardinals’ shortstop Paul DeJong was 9-for-13 with eight runs scored versus the Dodgers and is currently riding a nine-game hitting streak.
Pitchers: Cardinals – Adam Wainwright (1-0, 4.50 ERA) | Reds – Tanner Roark (0-0, 5.79)
Adam Wainwright seeks his 150th victory in his career and is coming off an impressive outing against the San Diego Padres last time out. The veteran right allowed just one run over six innings while striking out nine Padres after he was hit hard by the Pirates in his season debut. Wainwright has never fared well against Cincinnati, posting a 9-11 record and 5.09 ERA in 29 appearances (24 starts).
Tanner Roark will make his third start of the season and is looking for his first decision with his new team. The former Washington National has allowed three runs in each of his first two starts – a pair of no-decisions versus Milwaukee and Pittsburgh. Roark is 2-3 with a 6.58 ERA in seven appearances (five starts) versus the Reds.
The Reds are coming in with some confidence after their three-game sweep, but that was the Miami Marlins. The Cardinals are coming off a more impressive sweep themselves and should be able to get to Roark early and often here.
