The New York Yankees look to stay in the playoff hunt when they host the Toronto Blue Jays in the second of a three-game series on Tuesday night. The Yankees have rebounded from shutout losses to Baltimore on Friday and Saturday with two straight victories including Monday’s 5-3 win over Toronto in the opener. Jacoby Ellsbury, who was left out off the starting lineup on Sunday, came through with a home run and three RBI on Monday to pace the Yankees. New York is within 3.5 games of the second AL Wild Card spot and just 5.5 behind Toronto in the AL East standings. The Blue Jays have now lost three of four of their current nine-game road trip which concludes on Wednesday. Toronto is trying to hold of Boston (1 GB) and Baltimore (2 GB) and will host the Red Sox this weekend. Toronto 2B Devon Travis is 5-for-13 in his last three games and was moved into the leadoff spot in the order on Monday. New York rookie RF Aaron Judge is 3-for-39 with 26 strikeouts in the last 13 games.
Pitchers: Blue Jays – Aaron Sanchez (13-2, 2.88 ERA) | Yankees – Luis Cessa (4-0, 4.17)
Aaron Sanchez went down to the minors in order to hold down his innings and returned with a stellar effort against Baltimore. He allowed just one unearned run in six innings of work to pick up the victory. Sanchez is in his first full season as a starter in the majors and Toronto is trying to protect him from throwing out his arm despite being one of the key pieces in this playoff run. Sanchez made two starts against New York in the first half and went 1-0 while allowing a total of one earned run in 12.2 innings.
Cessa is making his fourth major-league start after pitching exactly six innings in his first three against the Angels, Orioles, and Royals. The rookie has had trouble keeping the ball in the park in the last two games allowing four home runs, but has walked just one in each of his starts. Cessa pitched a perfect inning of relief against Toronto on May 24th and is 2-0 with a 6.14 ERA in five home games (one start).
Sanchez has been really good this season and hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in 10 of his last 12 starts. He’s also shut down the Yankees twice already this season. Toronto will get to Cessa early and often and easily win this game.
