The Oakland A’s and San Francisco Giants got a much-needed day off on Monday and will get back in action Tuesday against each other as they battle for a wild card spot in their respective leagues. The American League wild card race is really coming down to two teams – the A’s and Tampa Bay Rays. As of Monday morning, the Rays have a 1.5 game edge on Oakland, who’s schedule is about to get a whole lot tougher coming up. The A’s will be concluding their eight-game road trip with two at San Francisco and are coming off an impressive pitching performance over the weekend in Chicago. Oakland limited the White Sox to a total of three runs while taking two of three after dropping two of three at the Chicago Cubs. Matt Olson’s 23rd home run of the season provided the difference in his team’s 2-0 victory on Sunday. San Francisco is 3.5 games behind the St. Louis Cardinals in a much more crowded NL wild card race after taking three of four from the Philadelphia Phillies over the weekend. Third baseman Evan Longoria is starting to heat up by going 5-for-7 with four RBI in the last two games against the Phillies. The Giants will go with ace Madison Bumgarner in the series opener against fellow lefty Brett Anderson for Oakland.

Anderson rebounded from a rough outing against Texas on July 25th with back-to-back quality starts in his last two against the Brewers and Cubs. Anderson scattered two runs and seven hits across six innings last Tuesday against the Cubs to earn his 10th victory. Anderson has allowed three runs or less in eight of his last nine meetings with San Francisco but lasted only 3.1 innings at Oracle Park last July.

Bumgarner started the series with Philadelphia Thursday with a gem, tossing seven scoreless innings while allowing just one hit to earn his seventh victory of the season. He was roughed up a bit in his two prior starts at San Diego and Colorado, but owns a 3.08 ERA at home. Bumgarner limited the A’s to one run and three hits over six innings last July at Oracle Park to earn a 7-1 win.
The Giants are in the thick of a playoff race and who better to have on the mound than Bumgarner. The A’s have been getting good pitching, but the offense has stalled a bit and it will be tough to hit Bumgarner. Look for a tight low-scoring affair here.
