Opening Odds: Houston -133/10

The Houston Astros look to continue their dominance over the Colorado Rockies and sweep their two-game interleague set when the clubs meet on Wednesday night at Coors Field. Houston broke open a 2-2 game in the 10th inning en route to an 8-2 victory and their seventh-straight over the Rockies in a game we had wrong. Astros outfielder George Springer broke out of a slump with a home run in last week’s All-Star Game and now has eight RBIs in his last four games. Springer and Alex Bregman each homered in Tuesday’s victory as the Astros improved to a major league-best 35-15 on the road. Bregman has been on a tear as well, hitting .328 with 13 home runs and 35 RBI in his last 33 games, while Springer has reached base safely in nine of his 19 plate appearances since the break. Colorado lost its second straight following a seven-game winning streak when the Astros scored six runs in the 10th inning against Wade Davis and Yency Almonte. The Rockies have managed just three runs in the past two games. Rookie second baseman Garrett Hampson started his third straight game in place of DJ LeMahieu (oblique) and went 1-for-3 with a walk while batting seventh. Colorado starter German Marquez (paternity leave) is set to return to the starting rotation Sunday against Oakland.

Pitchers: Astros – Charlie Morton (11-2, 2.96 ERA) | Rockies – Jon Gray (8-7, 5.44)

By all accounts, Charlie Morton has had a terrific season, earning an All-Star nod in the process, but went into the break allowing a total of eight runs on 11 hits over his last two starts covering 10 innings. He still ranks third in the American League with 11.7 strikeouts per nine innings. Morton is 2-2 with a 4.53 ERA in eight career starts versus Colorado, including 1-1 with a 6.97 ERA in four outings at Coors Field.

Longtime Rockie pitcher Jon Gray was demoted to Triple-A on June 30th after struggling for much of the season. He came back on July 14th with a strong performance against Seattle, allowing one run over 7.1 innings in a 4-1 win. Gray is facing Houston for the first time and owns a 5-1 record and 3.42 ERA in nine career interleague starts.

The All-Star Break probably came a perfect time for Morton, who had been dominating much of the first half. I think he comes back fresh with a strong performance here, while I don’t think Gray can duplicate his latest outing. This is a cheap price to lay on the defending World Series champions.

Pick: Astros -125
