The Oakland Athletics have just 26 games remaining on their schedule and are in a battle with the Tampa Bay Rays and Cleveland Indians for the two American League wild card spots. The A’s begin a six-game homestand Tuesday against division-rival Los Angeles and are a half-game behind Cleveland for the second wild card spot and 1.5 behind Tampa Bay for the top spot. Boston is the only other team with a legitimate shot at catching the top three teams at this point (5 GB). Oakland ended a seven-game road trip with two losses at the New York Yankees to finish 4-3 and will get to play Detroit and Kansas City three more times each, while ending the season with four in Seattle. Matt Olson is swinging a hot bat for Oakland, homering in each of the last two contests and is 8-for-21 with three RBI and five runs scored during a five-game hitting streak. The Angels are on their way to a fourth consecutive losing season after losing eight of their last 10 overall including two of three at home to the Red Sox over the weekend. Albert Pujols is 7-for-16 with a home run and seven RBI in his last three games for L.A., who being a six-game road trip with Tuesday’s contest. Oakland is 9-5 in the season series including 4-3 at home.
Pitchers: Angels – Jaime Barria (4-7, 6.10 ERA) | Athletics – Mike Fiers (13-3, 3.40)
Barria is 0-4 with a 5.25 ERA in his last five outings, but has pitched well enough to win at least four of those. The Angels scored exactly two runs in four of those five games including an 11-2 loss to Houston on August 25th in which Barria allowed just two of those runs over 5.1 innings. He has yet to complete six innings or throw 100 pitches in his nine starts this season. Barria received a no-decision against the A’s after surrendering one run and striking out six over five innings in a 7-4 loss on June 6th.
Fiers has been on a historic roll this season, going 11-0 with a 2.41 ERA in 20 starts since throwing a no-hitter against Cincinnati on May 7th. He allowed one run, eight hits and two walks over 5.1 innings of a 2-1 victory at Kansas City last time out and will be pitching on six days of rest for the first time since the All-Star break. Fiers is 6-4 with a 4.84 ERA in 13 games (12 starts) against the Angels including 3-0 this season.
How can you not take Fiers and the A’s in any matchup right now? Not only is Oakland tough to beat at home, but they’re getting an Angels team who’s ready for next year. Look for the A’s to cruise in this one.
