The New York Yankees, who missed a big opportunity to gain ground on the Boston Red Sox over the weekend, will try and regroup as they head to Detroit to start a three-game series with the Tigers on Tuesday night. The Yankees started the weekend four games back of the Red Sox in the AL East, but lost two of three to fall five back. Oddly enough, the one game they won was against Chris Sale. New York continues to hold a comfortable lead in the first AL Wild Card spot with 39 games remaining as they continue their eight-game road trip. Slugger Aaron Judge went 1-for-12 with five strikeouts over the weekend while tying the major league record with at least one strikeout in his 37th straight game on Sunday. The hottest bat in the lineup belongs to Brett Gardner, who went 7-for-14 in three games against Boston over the weekend. New York LHP Aroldis Chapman appeared for the first time since being bounced from the closer’s role and struck out two in 1.1 hitless innings on Sunday. The Tigers snapped a six-game losing streak with a 6-1 win over the majors-best Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday but have dropped 12 of their last 15 to fall out of the wild card race. Outfielder Justin Upton has gone yard three times over the last three games.
Pitchers: Yankees – Masahiro Tanaka (8-10, 4.92 ERA) | Tigers – Matthew Boyd (5-6, 5.70)
Masahiro Tanaka will make his first start since coming off a short stint on the disabled list with shoulder inflammation. He went on the DL after one of his worst starts on August 9th, allowing three runs – two earned – and issuing five walks in four innings at Toronto. Tanaka walked a total of three batters in his previous six outings and was solid against Detroit on August 2nd, when he surrendered two runs – one earned – while striking out seven and walking one in six innings, but still suffered a loss.
Matthew Boyd actually pitched on Friday, coming out of the bullpen to help a tired staff against the and allowed a run in 1.1 innings, while throwing 30 pitches. Boyd has failed to complete six innings in any of his last three starts, allowing a total of 12 earned runs in 14 innings over that span. He missed the Yankees earlier this month and lost his lone career start against them when he allowed four runs in six inning last June.

I only give the slight edge to New York in this one based on the pitching matchup, but it’s far from a sure thing. I’m not willing to lay this much money on a road team with a struggling pitcher. I’m actually going to take the over in this one as I can see the Yankees lineup waking-up against Boyd here, who’s not pitching on normal rest.
