The New York Yankees will try and chip away at the lead the Boston Red Sox stole from them towards the end of the first half of the season when they meet on Friday night to open a three-game set. New York, who trails Boston by 3.5 games to start the second half, has dropped 18 of 25 and will begin an 11-game road trip. Rookie sensation Aaron Judge leads the majors with 30 homers and won the Home Run Derby at the All-Star Game. Yankees DH Matt Holliday, who last played on June 24th due to a viral infection, is expected back in the lineup on Friday. The Red Sox should have a bigger lead over New York, but lost four of their last five before the break and are 1-4 against New York, scoring one run or fewer in each of the four losses. First baseman Mitch Moreland had a monster first half, but he did not record and RBI in his last 11 games after homering in three straight games.
Pitchers: Yankees – Michael Pineda (8-4, 4.39) | Red Sox – Drew Pomeranz (9-4, 3.60 ERA)
Manager Joe Girardi will go with Michael Pineda to start the second half and he could use a good outing. Pineda has allowed at least a run in everyone of his 17 starts including 15 over his last three outings. He turned in one of his best starts of the season on June 8th against Boston, allowing one run (unearned) in seven innings while striking out eight in a 9-1 victory.
Pomeranz ended the first half on a high-note, going unbeaten in his last five turns, allowing a combined six earned runs during that stretch. He earned Boston’s only win over the Yankees this season with five innings of two-run ball at Yankee Stadium on June 6th to improve to 2-1 with a 2.40 in six appearances (five starts) versus New York. Judge is 2-for-2 and Didi Gregorius 6-for-11 with a homer against him.

Neither team entered the All-Star Break with any sort of momentum, but the Yankees have Boston’s number so far this season and the Break might have been the best thing for this young New York team. Look for them to come out strong in the second half and take the opener of this big series.
Pick: Yankees +120
